LMU's Seniors Honored After Full Collegiate Careers

The 2023-2024 LMU men's basketball season concluded, which also means the end of the careers for three graduate seniors, all of whom exhausted their collegiate eligibilites. This last home game on Feb. 29 also doubled as their senior night to honor the work and dedication from Keli Leaupepe, Justice Hill (Juice), and Lars Thiemann

Before tip-off, there was a moment to honor each senior at a time. Each senior held up their framed jerseys and stood next to loved ones in front of the Gersten Pavilion crowd.

Both Hill and Thiemann were in the starting lineup to take on the San Diego Toreros in their final home game. Unfortunately, Leaupepe was not in uniform, which had been the case for several weeks due to injury.

On the court, Hill scored 12 points and Thiemann finished with 10 points. Hill had four rebounds along with Theimann's three rebounds to contribute to the team total of 51 rebounds for the night. Hill was consistently getting looks for his teammates finishing with six assists. Hill played 32 minutes and Thiemann finished with 18 minutes.

Although Leaupepe was not on the court, he is still such an asset to the team. During the postgame press conference, when asked what kind of off the court contributions he has seen from Leaupepe, LMU head coach Stan Johnson said "everything, nothing has changed with Keli." Coach Johnson had an abundance of positive things to say about Leaupepe's commitment to the success of his team.

Johnson went on to say, "He's losing his voice in practice from coaching … when I'm not around he's the leader."

Leaupepe, who made his way to LMU as a freshman from Melbourne, Australia, is finishing out a strong collegiate career. He had accomplishments from the very beginning of his time as a Lion. As a freshman he was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team, named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention team in his sophomore year, and finished off his last two years as a Lion being named to the WCC All-Academic team in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Hill is finishing his collegiate career at LMU after having a journey to get where he is today. He started off at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake, Utah, finishing off that 2019-2020 season being named a NJCAA First Team All-American. He then transferred to Murray State where he played his sophomore and junior seasons. Hill led the Racers to the NCAA Tournament and earned a win in the Round of 64. After that he transferred to LSU to continue playing for head coach Matt McMahon. At each stop in his career, Hill has shown that he is a player with tenacity and determination.

Thiemann, coming all the way from Krefeld, Germany, finished his fifth and final year of collegiate basketball at LMU. His first four years of collegiate basketball were at The University of California, Berkeley where he had a career of consistency and growth. Thiemann finished his fourth season with multiple honors such as being named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament Team and earning the Golden Bear Achievement Award after maintaining the team's highest GPA.

When the buzzer went off on their final home game, the Lions celebrated both a 96-62 win against San Diego, and the careers of the members of the senior class.
