LOS ANGELES – On Feb. 22, the LMU women's basketball team will host the Play 4 Kay game, a special game dedicated to commemorating those lost to breast cancer and showing support for those currently facing the battle. This event holds significant meaning beyond just a basketball game for both the players and those involved in the program.
Over the past few years, the women's basketball team has collaborated with Onward Group Travel, a travel company responsible for arranging all team travel. Recently, the team discovered that the 36-year-old CEO, Aniseh Dalju, has been a resilient survivor of breast cancer for 11 years.
The athletics department had a chance to interview Dalju on the importance of this game and what it means to her:
Q: What does a game like this mean to you?
Dalju: "You already have an audience that honor women, and this is a great opportunity to talk about something that can impact 1 in 8 women. Raising awareness is the first step to opening up, making it easy for women to talk about it, to seek advice and get help."
Q: What does working with a school with these kinds of games mean to you?
Dalju: "Proud to be affiliated with the school, the game, the team, the women who are willing to shine a light on cancers affecting women. Coach Kay Yow is incredible to have used her position to create awareness. Cancer is real, and it cannot be taboo. The more awareness women have, the more courage they'll have to teach others about prevention, screening, and, ultimately, the fight if necessary. Even in tragedy, it's important to know we belong."
Breast cancer is the no. 2 most common cancer for women in the USA, with every two minutes there being a diagnosis. There are ways to reduce the disease, and there is hope.
Come out to the Play 4 Kay game on Feb. 22 at 7 PM against the Saint Mary's Gaels in Gersten Pavilion.
