Shooting Struggles Allow USF to Pull Away Despite Porter’s 22

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – LMU scored the first eight points of the second half coming out of intermission to take a lead and erase a six-point halftime deficit. The run did not last long as San Francisco scored the next 10 unanswered points to retake the lead and hold on for a 70-55 win in the conference opener against the Lions.

Each team struggled to shoot coming out of the gate. The Lions started 1-for-12 from the field, while USF started the game shooting 2-for-16. Alex Merkviladze hit the only shot in LMU's first dozen attempts, a go-ahead three as part of his nine-point night.

After falling behind 5-3, LMU rattled off the next seven points sparked by a corner three from Myron Amey, Jr. Amey scored 10 points with a pair of threes.

San Francisco clawed back to tie the game at 16-all with 5:53 on the clock. Caleb Stone-Carrawell pushed the Lions ahead by a bucket on LMU's ensuing possession.

The Dons answered with a 13-3 run to push ahead by nine with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Jevon Porter scored the next five points in less than 25 second, before USF took a 31-25 lead into intermission.

The Lions scored the first eight points of the second half to retake the lead. Stone-Carrawell soared in for a game-tying dunk and Alex Merkviladze followed with a jumper of an out of bounds play to give LMU the 33-31 lead with 16:18 remaining. The Dons then responded with 10 consecutive points before Porter's and-1 put an end to the run.

Porter scored 15 of LMU's 30 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 22.

The shots just didn't fall for the Lions. LMU finished with a season-low three made threes and 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from long range. The Lions tied a season low with 19 total field goals.

West Coast Conference play will continue on Monday evening against Washington State in Spokane, Wash., for the only regular season meeting of the season between the two teams.
