SPOKANE, Wash. – LMU and Washington State played each other for the first time as West Coast Conference opponents on Monday night at Spokane Arena. Neither team held more than a four-point lead in the first half, before the Cougars pulled away to take the game, 73-59.
The Lions answered an opening three with a
Caleb Stone-Carrawell three of their own and followed with a
Jevon Porter layup to take an early 5-3 lead.
The opening 20 minutes featured 16 first half lead changes and seven ties as
Rick Issanza put the Lions up twice early game with a dunk and a second rim finish.
Jan Vide hit five baskets in the first half to lead the Lions with 10 points at intermission. Vide finished 5-for-6 in the contest.
Washington State's late shot gave the Cougars a 36-34 advantage at the half.
Despite retaking the lead on free throws, LMU started 0-for-7 from the field to start the second half as Washington State put together an 10-0 run to build up a nine-point lead. That run extended to 23-7 over an eight-and-a-half-minute stretch to push the Cougs ahead by 15 with 9:06 to play before an
Aaron McBride dunk.
Stone-Carrawell then hit LMU's next seven points to cut the deficit back down to 10. Stone-Carrawell shared game-high honors with 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Stone-Carrawell also tied his career-high with four of LMU's nine steals.
Myron Amey, Jr. scored LMU's final six points to finish at 13 in the game, including a streak of four-consecutive free throws with 2:16 to play.
LMU's bench scored 29 points
Washington State shot the best of any LMU opponent this season, hitting 49.1 percent (28-for-57) of their shots. The Lions struggled from behind the arc, hitting only three threes for the second-consecutive game.
The Lions return home for a big week, hosting Oregon State on Thursday, Jan. 2, and Gonzaga on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tickets for both games are available on the AXS app or through the LMU ticket office.
