LMU Claims Cancun Challenge Championship Behind Late 13-2 Run

CANCUN, Mexico – The 2024 Cancun Challenge Riviera Division championship was not decided until the final minutes of play on Wednesday night. The Lions led by 13 at halftime, trailed by 10 in the second half, and closed the game on a 19-6 run over the final 5:31 to win the Multi Team Event, 73-70.

Jevon Porter played a pivotal part in pushing LMU ahead by double-digits in the first half. Porter hit five threes before halftime and scored 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Porter finished with 29 points, the most of any Lion this season. The Lions lead grew to 16 on Porter's triple a the 5:22 mark as LMU jumped ahead 36-20.

Caleb Stone-Carrawell added eight first half points on 4-for-5 from the field to contribute to LMU's 53.3 percent shooting in the first half.

Wyoming quickly flipped the scrip to open the second half, erasing the deficit with a 17-3 run to take their first lead since 10-7. The Pokes extended their lead with an opening seven minute run of 37-14 to pull ahead double-digits, 64-54, with 5:47 to play in regulation.

From that point, the comeback began. Aaron McBride dunked the ball on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to six with just over five minutes to play. The run continued as Stone-Carrawell hit a jumper, followed by a McBride's layup, and a Porter layup to tie the game at 64-64 with 3:19 showing on the clock.

After Wyoming hit a couple of free throws to go back on top, Porter scored his 29th point on a go-ahead three. Stone-Carrawell scored his 17th point to give LMU a 69-66 lead with 40 ticks remaining.

Will Johnston hit double-digits by hitting four free throws down the stretch to go along with his team-high five assists.

The Lions benefitted from an 18-3 advantage on fast break points and finished shooting 49.1 percent from the field. LMU also tied a season-best mark shooting 81.8 percent (9-for-11) from the free throw line.

With their performances, Porter was named Riviera Division MVP and Johnston was named to the All-Tournament Team.

This is the second MTE win for LMU under Head Coach Stan Johnson. Two years ago, Johnson led the Lions to a win at the 2022 Jamaica Classic.

This game turned into the first of three consecutive games against Mountain West Conference teams. LMU will travel to Colorado State on Wednesday before hosting Nevada on Dec. 7. Both the Rams and Wolfpack made it to last season's NCAA Tournament.
