FORT COLLINS, Colo. – LMU played a much stronger second half, but the lead that Colorado State built in the opening 20 minutes was too much to overcome. The Rams beat the Lions for a third consecutive season, 83-54.
Both offenses started slowly on Wednesday night, as four minutes into the game
Caleb Stone-Carrawell hit a three to tie the game at 4-4.
The Rams came out of the first media timeout and built up a seven-point lead before
Jan Vide and Myron Amey, Jr. hit back-to-back jumpers to bring it back to a one-possession game.
Colorado State's shooting awoke with a 31-6 run over the next ten-plus minutes turned the three-point game into a 28-point advantage for the home team with just over two minutes to play before halftime.
Alex Merkviladze hit a three and a two over the next minute to not only put an end to the run but surpass 1,000 career points in his collegiate career. Merkviladze entered the day with 998 points as a college basketball play.
Colorado State's 11
th three of the half made it 46-20 game at intermission.
Will Johnston scored all 12 of his points in the second to lead the Lions including the opening three after the teams returned from halftime.
The Lions used back-to-back baskets from Stone-Carrawell to start the second half on a 7-3 run. Carrawell scored nine points on the night.
LMU cut the deficit down to 20 as Amey hit a jumper just ahead of the 13-minute mark of the second half. Amey joined Johnston in double-figures with 10 points.
Vide shared team-high honors with four field goals to add nine points.
The Rams finished 14-for-36 from three, compared to the 4-for-21 long range shooting for the Lions.
LMU did hold a 16-5 edge in fast break points.
The Lions will return to Los Angeles for the first time this month with a home game Saturday night against Nevada. The first1,500 fans in attendance will receive a special edition "Covered in Crimson" shirt and all fans are encouraged to wear red to support the Lions against the Wolf Pack.
