LOS ANGELES – The upcoming season will see three new transfers added to the LMU women's volleyball team roster: Jiana Lawson, Sophie Stephenson, and Sophia Meyers.
Lawson, a senior middle blocker hailing from Tucson, AZ, brings a wealth of experience to the LMU women's volleyball team. Prior to joining LMU, she spent one season at the University of Portland and two seasons at San Jose State University. During her time at Portland, Lawson achieved the distinction of being a two-time Dean's List member. At SJSU, she earned recognition as a 2023 CSC All-District Team member and a Presidential scholar.
Lawson consistently ranked in the top 50 throughout the season in blocking and blocks per set at SJSU. In the previous season, she secured the 35th position in the nation for total blocks and the 42nd position for blocks per set. Her decision to choose LMU was influenced by the appealing area, the commendable business program, and the opportunity to be coached by some of the best coaches in the country.
Meyers, a 6'0" junior from Seattle, WA, brings her skills and achievements to the LMU women's volleyball team. Before joining LMU, Meyers spent time at Montana and a year at Portland State. During her tenure at Montana, she showcased her talent by playing in every set and leading the Grizzlies with an impressive 2.71 kills per set. Notably, she achieved a career-high of 18 kills in two matches and earned a nomination to the All-Big Sky Second Team in her freshman year. Transitioning to Portland State, Meyers made a significant impact by breaking the single-season program record for aces per set with 0.47. By the end of the 2023 season, she earned All-Big Sky First Team recognition. Meyers was drawn to LMU for its comprehensive rigor across all aspects of university life.
Sophie Stephenson, a 6'2" sophomore outside hitter from Seattle, WA, making the move from the University of Illinois, brings a unique set of accomplishments to the LMU women's volleyball team. While red-shirting her freshman year, she earned the prestigious All-Big Ten Academic First Team honoree title. Stephenson's journey began at The Bush High School, where she secured a varsity spot throughout all four years and consistently earned All-League recognition.
In her junior year at The Bush High School, Stephenson received The Blue and White Award, an accolade that acknowledges student-athletes for their self-motivation and outstanding display of energy, effort, and execution on the court.
From Coach
Trent Kersten, "I am thrilled to announce the additions to our team: Sophie, Sophia, and Jiana have all enrolled this Spring semester. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to train them and watch their growth over the next few months. With their exceptional volleyball skills, each of them is poised to elevate our program. I look forward to witnessing their positive influence on our team culture for the remainder of their careers at LMU."
With these three additions, next season will be an exciting year for the LMU women's volleyball team.
