Lions Win Back-to-Back Tournaments to Open the Season, Lewis Wins by Eight Strokes

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The special start to LMU's 2023-24 season continues as the Lions claimed their second team tournament title in as many events to open the year. LMU led after both the second and final rounds at the USF-Howard Intercollegiate at TPC Harding Park to win the event by 14 strokes on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions shot 38-under par over the three rounds to win with an impressive 281-272-273—826. The Lions lowered their score another 15 strokes in the third round of play at TPC Harding Park thanks in part to the tournament-high 69 birdies recorded by the team. LMU shot a tournament-best 35-under par on Par 5 holes and shared the best average on Par 3s as well. The field included three teams ranked in the top-50 on Golfstat, with No. 40 San Francisco placing second at 24-under, No. 46 New Mexico placing fourth at 15-under, and No. 49 San Diego placing in a tie for sixth at 12-under par.

This is LMU's first back-to-back wins since the Spring of 2021, when the Lions took first at CBU's Joust at Goose Creek and followed that with a win at the Sacramento State Invitational.

Riley Lewis broke his own program record and became the first LMU golfer in school history to shoot under 200 in a 54-hole event. Lewis shot three rounds in the 60s to finish 19-under par at 67-68-62—197. Lewis lowered his score by 10 strokes over the final 18 holes by recording eight birdies and an eagle on the last day of play to shoot a program-record 62 on Tuesday. Six of the nine birdies came on the front nine and the eagle followed on 12. Lewis recorded a tournament-best 20 birdies over his three rounds.

Freshman Mason Snyder recorded his first career top-5 finish after hitting 73-69-66—208. Snyder recorded seven of his 15 birdies in the final round, including four in a row between Holes 9 and 12.

Tony Hendricks tied for 15th at 69-69-74—212 and Trevor Algya finished under par at 72-72-71—215.

Cade Anderson rounded out the team scoring with his 74-66-77-217.

All six LMU players, including individual Caden McMackin, finished between 19-under and 1-over par. McMackin led all individuals and recorded his first career top-10 finish with his 68-71-71—210.

Following the momentous opening two weeks of the season, the Lions will next compete in Jonesborough, Tenn., at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 8-10.
