#15 Lions Return to Win Column in Front of Friday Night Crowd

Box Score LOS ANGELES – 15th-ranked LMU men's water polo used a big second quarter to pull away from and defeat George Washington on Friday night under the lights. The Lions won their lone game of the week by defeating the Revolutionaries, 9-7.

George Washington scored off a penalty shot just under two minutes into the game. The Lions equalized on a powerplay goal as Abel Romero Corbalan found Tommaso Baldineti for the goal. The roles reversed as Romero Corbalan scored on a powerplay from a Baldineti pass to give the Lions their first lead. George Washington tied the game on a 6-on-5 to make it a tie score at the end of the first quarter.

After the Revolutionaries took a lead, it was all Lions the rest of the half. LMU scored the next three goals before intermission to carry a 5-3 lead into the break. Jonny Rimlinger tied the game at 3-all with 1:31 remaining in the half, Denzel Tate scored with 45 seconds remaining, and Romero Corbalan added another with seven seconds remaining.

The lead continued to build for the Lions as Tate and Augie Renezeder scored early in the third quarter. The GW goalkeeper put an end to the run with a goal across the pool to make it 7-4 with 3:32 to play in the period.

George Washington brought the score to within two with just over five minutes remaining before Baldineti provided the response. With 2:36 to play, it once again became a two-goal difference, at 8-6. Alex Marlow secured the victory by punching in the team's final goal with 38 seconds remaining. A late five-meter call gave GW one last goal before the game went final.

Stelios Dalmaras played the entire game in the cage, making 11 saves.

The Lions will host three games on Sept. 23. LMU will play UC Santa Barbara at 10:30 am, followed by a neutral game between the Gauchos and San Jose State at 1:30 pm, and the day concludes with the Lions playing the Spartans at 4:30 pm.
