IRVINE, Calif. — No. 16 LMU (4-0) secured two more victories in a second straight day of double headers on August 29th. The wins came over Concordia University (2-1), dominating by a score of 20-9 and a 15-12 victory over George Washington (2-2) at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. LMU used two impressive displays of offense to pull away in both games and maintain its unbeaten record.
Concordia
LMU took an early lead, as Soren Martin scored at 5:05 and Roman Saroyan added another at 2:48 in the first period. Concordia responded with two quick goals by Hugo Wouters, leveling the score 2-2 before Eduardo Carraresi's last-second goal at 0:01 put the Lions ahead 3-2. The second quarter saw a dominant 8-1 run by LMU, with Jaxon Hoover scoring twice, bringing the score to 11-4. Concordia attempted to rally in the third quarter, but the Lions maintained their lead with Gabrijel Burburan netting two goals, making it 15-8. Loyola Marymount clinched the victory with a final score of 20-9, outshooting Concordia 34-28.
Eduardo Carraresi led the Lions with three goals on three attempts and added an assist. Gabrijel Burburan contributed significantly, matching Carraresi's three goals and providing two assists on six shots. Hoover was also a strong performer, scoring two goals and delivering an assist. In goal, Adrian Ramirez provided stability with eight saves and two assists.
George Washington
LMU began the game with a goal by Nico Furneaux at 7:08 in the first quarter. George Washington quickly equalized with Gabriele Molfino scoring at 6:31 off an assist from Konstantinos Kapragkos. The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, with Eduardo Carraresi scoring twice for the Lions, resulting in a 3-3 tie at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, LMU pulled ahead with a three-goal streak, including contributions from Johnny Mendiburu and Gabrijel Burburan, establishing a 7-5 lead. George Washington fought back in the third, narrowing the gap with a goal from Yam Kabakov at 4:18, but the Lions responded with a surge, highlighted by Roman Saroyan's goal at 1:52 to maintain a 10-8 advantage. Despite a late push from George Washington, LMU held on for a 15-12 victory, outshooting its opponent 38-28.
Eduardo Carraresi delivered a standout performance with four goals on four shots and added three assists. Furneaux was equally effective, scoring four times and providing two assists while winning a sprint. Burburan contributed significantly with two goals, two assists, and two sprint wins. In goal, Adrian Ramirez made a crucial impact with 11 saves and four steals.
LMU improves to a record of 4-0 and is ranked No. 16 nationally. Looking ahead, the Lions will face the top-ranked team in the nation, UCLA, on Saturday, Sept. 12. The match is set for noon in Los Angeles, California.
