Men's Golf

Men's Golf Wins Opening Tournament, Shoots 47 Under Par

Pawleys Island, SC – LMU men's golf are champions of the Golfweek Fall Challenge to officially kick-off the 2023-24 season. The Lions shot an impressive 47-under par, including a tournament-best final round 16-under to shoot 271-274-272—817 over the three-day event.

The win is the first for the program since Spring of 2021 when the Lions won back-to-back team titles at the Joust at Goose Creek followed by the Sacramento State Invitational.

In total, LMU recorded 10 of the 15 possible rounds in the 60s to lead to a program-record 817. The Lions won the event by a stroke over Washington State with a 271-274-272—817, and passed the Cougars on the final day with the Tuesday score of 272. The opening round 271 was the lowest for the team in over 20 years.

The Lions led the field with a 2.91 average on Par 3 holes as well as a 4.60 average on Par 5s. Overall, LMU shot 30-under on Par 5 holes over the three days.

All five members of the team, as well as Caden McMackin (68-72-71—211) who competed as an individual, finished under par for the 14-team event.

Riley Lewis finished in a tie for third and two strokes off the lead at 65-68-68—201. Lewis' 201 score surpasses Riley Elmes for best all-time tournament score, which was set in January 2019 at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Lewis finished his tournament with 16 holes under par compared to just one hole over par to sit at 15-under.

Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Mason Snyder tied for seventh at 68-66-71—205. Snyder used 19 birdies throughout the event, which was one shy of the tournament-best.

Also tying for seventh, Tony Hendricks put together three consecutive rounds in the 60s with his 69-68-68—205. Hendricks led the Lions with 39 holes of par.

Trevor Algya shot an even 72 for each of the last two rounds to finish at 69-72-72—213.

No player jumped into a higher position than Cade Anderson, who leaped 29 spots between Monday and Tuesday. Anderson opened his final round with a par, back-to-back birdies, and an eagle on four, then shot three consecutive birdies to open the back nine for a combined 7-under on the day at 71-78-65—214.

Competing as an individual, Caden McMackin tied for 25th and shot 68-72-71—211 over the course of the event, including also starting with an eagle on four in round 1.

The Lions will look to carry momentum into the USF/Howard Intercollegiate on Sept. 18 and 19 in San Francisco.
