Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

#14 Lions Lead Early, Stay Competitive Against #6 Stanford

LOS ANGELES – 14th-ranked LMU men's water polo led early against a tough Stanford team, before the tied-for-sixth Cardinal pulled away to take the game, 19-8.

Stelios Dalmaras set the tone early with a 5-meter penalty shot save just a minute and nine seconds into the game. With no score by either side over the first three minutes, it was a powerplay goal from Rafael Salonikios to push the Lions ahead early. Stanford responded with the next three goals before Max Walsworth brought it back to a one-goal game on LMU's final possession of the period.

Stanford scored the first three goals of the second period before LMU converted another powerplay with Augie Renezeder beating the goalkeeper. The Cardinal scored the next two goals, beginning with a converted penalty shot. After Stanford made it an 8-3 game, Kade Margain converted another 6-on-5 with less than two minutes to play in the half. Stanford added two goals over the next minute and a half before Dalmaras beat the buzzer to make it 10-5 game at intermission.

The second half opened with three Stanford games before Renezeder put the end to the run with his second powerplay goal of the day. The Cardinal scored the final four goals of the period to break the score open to 17-6 after three.

The two sides played an even fourth quarter, scoring two goals apiece. Tommaso Baldineti scored back-to-back goals at 5:45 and 4:26 showing on the clocks.

In addition to his goal, Dalmaras made six saves and added a steal.

The Lions remain at home with a 6:00 PM Friday night showdown against George Washington under the lights. The game will be free admission, and the first 50 students of legal drinking age will be given up to two free beers provided by Wagon Wheel Brewing.
