LOS ANGELES – The LMU Lions women's soccer team battled to a tough 1-0 loss to Santa Clara on Wednesday night at Sullivan Field.
The Lions fought hard against one of the top teams in the West Coast Conference, allowing only four shots on goal. The lone goal allowed came on a penalty shot.
Makayla Demelo found some space at the end of some nice buildup between herself, Madison Werner and
Sarah Murphy. She fired a long distance shot that ended up just wide of the goal.
The penalty was awarded in the 51st minute after goalkeeper Amanda Delgado was left in a one-on-one situation and fouled the approaching player.
The Lions withstood a barrage of second-half attempts from the Broncos attack, but Santa Clara could only manage the one goal. They ended the game with 17 shots.
The Lions had a pair of set pieces late in the game that provided additional chances.
Gabriella Marchal played a dangerous ball into the back post after
Amanda Perez was fouled in the attacking half. The ball was cleared away for a corner. Marchal once again lined up the corner and fired a ball to the back post.
Jennie Immethun could not get a shot past the Broncos defense and the horn sounded ending the game.
The backline of
Alice Santen,
Genevieve Watkins and Marchal continued to be a formidable force. The threesome played all 90 minutes again. Santen and Marchal have played every minute of every game with Watkins receiving a 26-minute break against Portland.
The Lions are back in action on Saturday, October 8 against Saint Mary's. That match will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. (PT) in Moraga, Calif.
