MORAGA, Calif. - Madison Thomas hit a stunning strike right before halftime but the LMU women's soccer team fell to the host Saint Mary's Gaels 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
The Lions fell behind early, with the Gaels scoring in the game's second minute. They would add another before Thomas took a rip from well outside the 18-yard box.
Jessie Halladay pressured one of the Saint Mary's center backs into a poor pass. Thomas intercepted took a pair of dribbles and let loose a straight and hard shot that found the right side of the net. It was Thomas's first goal of the season.
The Lions sustained pressure in the second half. There were two instances where chances were just missed.
In the 61
st minute, Amanda Perez continued her impressive form of late and made a tough run down the right wing. She cut back and fired a cross across the face of goal and narrowly missed finding Halladay's foot.
It was Madison Werner with the other chance in the 75th minute. Ellen Loncar received the ball past midfield and played Werner through onto goal. She put her shot wide and high.
The Lions continue West Coast Conference play on Saturday, October 15 against USD. That math will begin at approximately 7 p.m. (PT).
