LOS ANGELES –
Jalin Anderson scored a career-high 19 points and
Eli Scott added 21 to combine for 40 of the team's points on Saturday night before the Lions fell to San Diego, 69-65.
Following go-ahead shots by
Cam Shelton,
Joe Quintana, then
Kwane Marble II, LMU went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-6 lead.
San Diego cut it to a one-point game before
Jalin Anderson scored his first of eight baskets to give LMU a 20-17 lead. The Toreros then scored the next eight points to go ahead by seven before another Anderson jumper stopped the run.
The Lions closed out the first half on a 6-0 run including the final two buckets from Anderson to tie the score at 33-all heading into intermission.
Just like in the first half, Shelton pushed LMU ahead by two to open the final 20-minute period.
San Diego retook the lead before Anderson hit his second three of the game to give LMU a 40-39 advantage.
Scott pushed the Lions ahead at the 9:36 mark as part of his game-high scoring night.
San Diego would go up six on two separate occasions down the stretch, but each time the Lions cut it back to single digits. The first occurance was cut in half as
Keli Leaupepe hit a three with 4:34 to play and the second came as LMU hit free throws with 2:01 to play.
Anderson converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 65-64 with 1:46 to play. The LMU defense earned a stop with less than a minute to play and down two points but could not find the tying or go-ahead basket.
Anderson's previous career-high was 16 points, which he scored last season at Pepperdine. Anderson made eight of 12 field goals, after previously recording a high of five just once.
The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes.
LMU is on the road for two games next week as WCC play continues.
