Lions Lose Nail Biter to Dons

SAN FRANCISCO – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (9-16, 2-6 WCC) trailed early and climbed all the way back, tying the game in the seventh, but gave up a pair in the eighth inning and fell for the second straight game to the University of San Francisco 8-6.

The Lions surrendered runs to the Dons in the first four innings and found themselves trailing by five midway through the game. The run LMU picked up was in the visiting half of the second on a triple from Alec Cargin followed by a double from Matt Voelker.

LMU began their comeback in the fifth, starting off the inning with an Alex Lambeau single followed by a Kenny Oyama double. Lambeau scored on the sacrifice fly by Julian Bury and Oyama came home on Diego Baqueiro's RBI groundout to second.

Heading into the sixth the Lions loaded the bases with their first three batters getting on via a walk and two singles. LMU scored their fourth run of the game when Matthew Piotrowski was hit by a pitch. The fifth run for the Lions came courtesy of Lambeau's double play but the rally ended on Bury's fly out to center.

The Lions loaded the bases again in the seventh and eventually tied the game on Dylan Dennis' RBI walk but the rally stalled after the next two batters lined out and struck out.

The tie was broken by the Dons in the eighth when they rallied for a pair of runs which proved to be too much for the Lions.

For the game Oyama went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, and run scored while Voelker went 1-for-3 with a double, walk, run, and an RBI.

The Lions and Dons wrap up their three-game set tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. LMU will go with Matt McClure and he'll go opposite Grant Nechak.
