LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (11-18, 4-8 WCC) took the weekend series over the University of San Diego with a thrilling 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions bounced back from Saturday night's setback with a strong performance throughout the game. Sunday starter
Jimmy Galicia put together his best performance of the season, throwing seven innings of five hit baseball with a strikeout against 27 Torero batters.
The performance on the hill gave the Lions all they needed to take the series over San Diego two games to one. Cementing the series victory for LMU was
Matt Voelker who picked up the two inning save. He shut the door on the series with a pair of strikeouts and got the final out when the Toreros grounded out at third to end the game.
Matthew Piotrowski continued his hot hitting for LMU, going 1-for-3 with a bases clearing triple in the bottom of the first inning giving the Lions a lead they would never give up.
The Lions put another run on the board in the home half of the second when
Kenny Oyama doubled to score
Ben Grunberg and their final run came in the form of an
Alex Lambeau homer to left center. The homerun by Lambeau was his first of the season and provided the Lions with enough cushion for their fourth series win of the season.
LMU begins an eight game road stretch with the first of those on Tuesday night when they head up to UCLA and play the Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch between the Lions and Bruins is set for 6:00 p.m.
