Lions Stumble Against Toreros

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (10-18, 3-8 WCC) put eight hits on the board but couldn't produce any runs and stumbled in the second contest of their three-game series against San Diego 6-0.

The Lions got multiple hits in three straight innings but couldn't get any of those to produce runs. Julian Bury went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles while Matthew Piotrowski was 3-for-4 with a double and two singles for the Lions.

Matt McClure drew the Saturday night start and he produced five innings of eight hit baseball with three strikeouts against 24 San Diego batters.

LMU shut down San Diego in the even innings but had trouble with the odd ones giving up a total of six runs in those frames which proved to be the difference.

The Lions had their chances to get runs on the board, putting runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings but couldn't get a timely hit to bring in a score. LMU also made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs and while Bury worked an 11-pitch at bat it didn't result in any runs as he flied out to end the game.

LMU's bullpen was solid in relief of McClure. The combination of Adam Christopher and Logan Hurd held the Toreros scoreless for four innings and only allowed two hits while striking out a pair.

The Lions and Toreros wrap up their three-game set tomorrow afternoon with the rubber match to determine the series winner. First pitch between the two schools is slated for 1:00 p.m.
