LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (8-12, 1-3 WCC) used a pair of three run innings, solid starting pitching, and clutch work from the bullpen to propel themselves past the Gonzaga Bulldogs 7-1 on Friday night.
Heading into their second West Coast Conference series the Lions were looking to rebound and their bats came alive to the tune of nine hits and seven runs which proved to be more than enough against the Bulldogs.
Making his sixth start on the year
CJ Fernandezees gave the Lions 4 1/3 innings of five hit baseball while striking out four and surrendering one run. He was able to pitch himself out of jams in the first and third innings, settling down in the fourth before giving way to the bullpen in the fifth.
The Lions pulled away from the Bulldogs with a pair of three run innings the first of which came in the third. LMU sent seven batters to the plate and scored their three runs on a pair of doubles, the first from
Diego Baqueiro down the left field line and then by
Alec Cargin down the right field line.
LMU got their second three run inning in the fourth with an RBI single from
Evan Leibl a Gonzaga error and another Cargin double. For the game Cargin went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
While the Lions offense was in running full steam ahead
Holden Christian continued to dominate on the mound. Christian threw 3 2/3 of hitless baseball only allowing a walk while striking out six Bulldog batters. He came into the game in the top of the fifth and retired 10 straight batters before issuing a walk for the Bulldogs first runner since he stepped into the game.
The Lions and Bulldogs resume their series tomorrow night with
Matt McClure going against Bradley Mullan with first pitch at Page set for 6:00 p.m.
