Late Inning Rally Propels Lions to Victory

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (9-12, 2-3 WCC) used a four run seventh and a two run eighth coupled with strong pitching throughout the night to take the second straight game over the Gonzaga Bulldogs 8-4.

The Lions and Bulldogs both scored runs in the first inning and had chances in the middle portion of the game but neither team could get timely hits to add to their total till Gonzaga tied the game at two in the sixth.

Matt McClure started the game for the Lions and threw 5 2/3 innings of seven hit baseball. The righty had five strikeouts and one walk on the night while surrendering two runs before giving way to Josh Agnew.

With the game tied and a man on Agnew came in and promptly recorded the third out on a grounder stalling the Bulldogs rally at one.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh the Lions bats came alive. LMU had five hits in the inning and Alex Lambeau got things going with a double to left field. Kenny Oyama followed with a single putting two runners on base.

Tommy Delgado didn't waste any time putting the Lions ahead for good with his double down the left field line scoring both Lambeau and Oyama. LMU got another pair of runs on singles from Dylan Dennis and Ben Grunberg to close out the seventh with four runs on five hits.

With the Lions up by three Julian Bury added to the lead with a double to left center brining in a pair of runners pushing the lead to five.

Gonzaga scored a run in the ninth but it wasn't enough as LMU took their second straight game over the Bulldogs.

The Lions and Bulldogs wrap up the three-game set with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. at Page Stadium.
