LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (7-11, 0-3 WCC) fell behind midway through and showed some fight late but fell to the No. 21 Arizona Wildcats 18-2 on Monday afternoon.
The Lions started off a busy week, hosting the Wildcats on Monday and had opportunities to get on the board early but
Kenny Oyama's first inning double wasn't cashed in as LMU's next three batters were retired in order.
LMU put runners on in the second and third but couldn't get timely hitting to bring across any runs.
Ben Grunberg was in scoring position in the third but a groundout followed by a lineout ended the inning for the Lions.
Picking up the Monday afternoon start was
Sean Paquet and he gave the Lions 3 2/3 innings, striking out five while surrendering a pair of hits and runs.
The Lions had another opportunity to score runs in the home half of the fifth when
Dylan Dennis singled up the middle and got moved around the bases by
Cole Roberts and Grunberg but an Oyama groundout stalled the Lions rally.
LMU broke through in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. Both Grunberg and Oyama picked up RBIs in the frame and the Lions were looking to add more in the inning but a forceout at second followed by a strikeout ended the rally and scoring for the Lions.
The Lions put together a pair of singles in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't get anyone home and the game ended in favor of the Wildcats.
LMU continues their busy week with a game tomorrow night when they visit Jackie Robinson Stadium and the UCLA Bruins for the second time this season. First pitch between the Lions and Bruins is slated for 6:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live with links to the broadcast available on the baseball schedule page at lmulions.com.
