Lions Drop Seesaw Battle with Bruins

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (7-12, 0-3 WCC) went back and forth with UCLA on Tuesday night but couldn't come all the way back and fell to the No. 10 Bruins 13-6.

The Lions started off their second midweek game with scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Kenny Oyama started things off with a double to left center and was brought in on Julian Bury's single to center. Alec Cargin had a strong night for the Lions, hitting the first of his two homeruns when his shot went over the right field wall giving LMU a three run lead.

LMU found themselves in a hole to start the second and produced a pair of runs on RBI singles from Oyama and Tommy Delgado.

Starting the third inning Cargin didn't waste any time hitting his second homer of the night on the first pitch he saw. Cargin became the first Lion to hit two homeruns in a game since Trevin Esquerra hit a pair against Saint Mary's on April 20, 2019. On the night Cargin went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

The Lions gave the ball to Owen Hackman for the Tuesday night start and he produced a pair of strikeouts and a walk but picked up his second loss on the year.

LMU put runners on in the sixth and seventh but they couldn't cash in Dylan Dennis' double in the sixth or Bury's single in the seventh to pull closer to the Bruins. The Lions put a pair of runners on in the ninth but a strike out followed by a ground out ended the game in favor of the Bruins.

The Lions return to West Coast Conference play when they welcome Gonzaga for a three-game set starting on Friday, March 26th with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m. The entire series will be streamed live with links to the broadcast available on the baseball schedule page at lmulions.com.
