LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (2-3, 0-0 WCC) got homeruns from
Diego Baqueiro and
Alec Cargin, timely hitting in the fourth and fifth, and clutch fielding late to outlast Utah 7-6 on Friday night.
The duo of Baqueiro and Cargin didn't waste any time giving the Lions their first two homeruns of the year. Baqueiro homered to right center with
Tommy Delgado on to put the Lions up by two but that lead got extended when Cargin took the first pitch he saw over the wall in left center to push the lead to three.
CJ Fernandezees, making his second start of the year, had another strong outing on the mound. He was responsible for five innings of three hit baseball and struck out four. Fernandezees surrendered three runs but was able to pick up his first win of the year.
The Lions put up a pair of runs in the fourth and then another two in the fifth. In the fifth Baqueiro kept up his hot hitting with a triple down the right field line to bring home the speedy Delgado. He didn't spend too much time on bases as Cargin sent him home on the sacrifice fly to center giving the Lions a seven run lead.
In the top of the sixth the Lions almost saw their entire seven run lead evaporate. Utah loaded the bases with no outs and put four across before the Lions got a punchout. The Utes put another pair of runs across, totaling six in the inning, but the Lions managed to stem the rally there.
LMU's defense was on display in the final three innings to preserve the one run win. The Lions defense got double plays in the seventh, eighth, and a game ending one in the ninth to walk off winners.
Josh Agnew made his season debut and picked up the save for head coach
Nathan Choate's Lions.
Both teams go right back at it tomorrow night with right hander
Jimmy Galicia getting the start while David Watson will go for Utah. First pitch between the Lions and Utes is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
