Lions Power Past Utah

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (3-3, 0-0 WCC) got another homerun from Alec Cargin, one from Tommy Delgado, and stellar pitching from Jimmy Galicia to take the second straight game over Utah 9-7.

The Lions mirrored their start from last night by putting up three in the home half of the first. The hot hitting Cargin homered for the second straight night, this time a three run shot over the right field wall.

LMU got a pair of runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of a Utes error, their first of three on the night. Cole Roberts hit a perfectly placed bunt and on the throwing error by the Utes pitcher, Ben Grunberg and Dylan Dennis touched home plate to extend the Lions lead to five.

Jimmy Galicia, making his second start of the year, picked up his first win of the young season. Galicia threw 6 1/3 innings, striking out six, while giving up seven hits. He was sharp on the mound tonight for the Lions and at one point retired eight straight Utah batters.

The Lions got another run across in the fourth but in the home half of the fifth Tommy Delgado smashed his first homerun of the season sending a shot over the wall at right center. It was the first of two runs in the inning for LMU.

LMU totaled double-digit hits for the fourth time in their first six games with Diego Baqueiro, Grunberg, Cargin, and Delgado each getting a pair of hits tonight against Utah. In the Lions three wins this season, they've scored at least seven runs and will look to add to that total when they go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon.

The Lions ran into trouble in the top of the seventh and gave up five runs but withstood the Utes rally and when the final out was recorded picked up their third win of the season.

Getting the Sunday start for the Lions is Matt McClure and he'll be facing Trey Clarkson. First pitch for the series finale at Page is set for 1:00 p.m.
