LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount University Men's Basketball Head Coach
Stan Johnson has his team playing its best ball at the right time of the season. Winners of four-straight games in the tough West Coast Conference, a feat that has only been done by one other LMU team since 1991, Johnson continues to build LMU's resume.
Coming up a heroic career-high performance by
Eli Scott (37 points) on Tuesday to defeat Santa Clara and a gutty team win on Thursday night to beat San Francisco with only six active players, LMU has a chance to complete the special week on Saturday in a CBS Sports Network national broadcast over the visiting BYU Cougars.
The Lions (11-6, 6-3 WCC) are tied for third in the WCC standings, a half game behind the Cougars (16-5, 7-3 WCC) entering Saturday. The final two opponents on LMU's schedule are Pepperdine, who are also 6-3 in conference, and the nation's top team, undefeated Gonzaga. Both of those games will be played on the road next week, making Saturday's noon tip the final home game in Gersten Pavilion for Scott and his senior classmates. The game against the top-ranked Zags will air on the ESPN platform on Feb. 27 in the final date of the regular season.
LMU played a limited roster of only six players in Thursday's win, and even with one foul-out, outscored the Dons by 13 in the second half. Big performances by
Mattias Markusson, grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds in his double-double and
Eli Scott moving into 10
th all-time in career assists allowed the outnumbered Lions to pick up the road win.
Following the senior day recognitions, CBS Sports Network will televise a special analytics-driven presentation of Saturday's BYU-LMU matchup, bringing fans inside the world of college basketball analytics. In preparing for the telecast, CBS Sports production teams met with members of both coaching staffs to better understand how their programs utilize advanced stats in their practices, planning and in-game decision making in unique ways. The production will use this information, in conjunction with in-game advanced stats, to show viewers this utilization in action. The production will feature in-game segments, specially crafted graphics and analysis to highlight team and player performances beyond conventional stats as well as how programs are using analytics to better understand their teams strengths and weaknesses to gain an edge. Special guest analyst and current Penn Head Coach Steve Donahue will provide insight throughout the game from his unique perspective as an active coach alongside CBS Sports' Jason Horowitz and Chris Walker.
The last LMU team to win five consecutive games in the WCC was the 1990-91 Lions.
As always, the game will be available to the radio audience on KXLU 88.9 FM.
