Scott’s Double-Double Helps Lions Take Saint Mary’s to the Wire

LOS ANGELES – For the 18th time in his LMU career, Eli Scott posted a double-double. Despite Scott's 28 and 12 night, the Lions (7-5, 2-2 WCC) could not erase a second half deficit to Saint Mary's (10-5, 1-3 WCC), losing 65-61.

Despite trailing by 11 points midway through the second half, LMU had the ball in the final seconds down by just three. Dameane Douglas grabbed the rebound off a missed Saint Mary's free throw with eight seconds remaining, but as the Lions pushed forward, the team committed one of the season-high 27 turnovers with 1.9 remaining and without getting the potential tying shot off.

The Lions were able to get back into it as Scott scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half, including going 6-for-8 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line after intermission. Scott finished a career-best 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

The senior also dished out three assists, which ties Scott with Brandon Worthy for 10th all-time in career assists with 320.

Dameane Douglas scored a dozen for the Lions. Mattias Markusson grabbed double-figure rebounds for the first time this year, pulling in 10 to go along with his eight points.

LMU benefitted from 10 offensive rebounds, with half coming from Scott and the other half from Markusson, leading to a 14-to-3 advantage in second chance points. The 18 total rebounds by the Gaels were a season-low by an LMU opponent this season.

Both teams shot above 55 percent from the field in the second half, after both going under the 40 percent mark in the opening 20 minutes. LMU shot 12-for-20 from the field after intermission for a 60 percent mark.

The Lions shot a season-best 81.8 percent (18-for-22) from the free throw line, with Markusson finishing 6-for-6 from the line.

The largest lead by the Lions came early on as Joe Quintana hit a three to go up 7-2 just two and a half minutes into the game.
