Lions Refuel Baseball Roster with 19 Additions

With the addition of 19 new players, LMU baseball Head Coach Nathan Choate has built up a strong class for the 2021 season which includes a combination of high schoolers, junior college transfers, and graduate transfers.
 
"We are very excited about our incoming class," said Choate. "Coach Asaro did a great job spearheading the effort. Coach Curtis and Coach Erickson both worked tirelessly to help us add depth. It is a very large class in both size and stature. We are excited for these incoming players to join our strong nucleus of returning players. We look forward to starting school and getting back on the field."
 
 
Jimmy Galicia | RHP/OF | R/R | El Camino College | El Segundo HS | Hawthorne, CA

Jimmy Galicia appeared in 18 games as one of the team's two aces, making 16 starts and posting a 13-3 record with a 1.92 ERA in 122 innings pitched and four complete games. He finished second in the state with 13 wins leading to several awards and honors, including 2019 All-SCC South Division First Team, 2019 CCCBCA All-State Team, 2019 ABCA Rawlings Pacific Association Southern California All-Region Second Team, 2019/2020 CCCBCA Preseason All-American, 2020 JBB JUCO National Two Way Player of the Year, and 2020 All American.

"Jimmy is one of the best Junior College pitchers in the country. He attacks the strike zone and is a winner. His toughness on the mound will be a big asset. Jimmy will have the opportunity to throw big innings for us."
   
Julian Bury | OF | L/R | Columbia University | Cedar Cliff HS | Mechanicsburg, PA

Julian Bury was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, and First Team All-Ivy League in his first season at Columbia in 2017. He was named Second Team All-Ivy League as junior, and was on-pace again for all-conference recognitions in 2020 with a .355 batting average and .429 OBP before the season was cut short.

"Julian brings an edge and a toughness to our team right away. As a grad-transfer from Columbia we think he has the ability to have a major impact. His maturity as a hitter will be a huge asset to our club, especially the young guys around him."
    
Alex Cargin | C | L/R | Wofford College | Collins Hill HS | Lawrenceville, GA

Alex Cargin earned a spot on the Coastal Plains League Select Team where he played against Team USA in 2019. His honors and recognitions include, All-County Academic Team selections (2015, 2016), Georgia Dugout Club Top 100 (2016), SoCon Academic Honor Roll (2017), CoSida Google Cloud All-District Team (2019),SoCon Academic All-Conference (2018, 2019), and Northwoods League All Star (2018). He led the Southern Conference in RBI in 2020 before the season was cut short.
 
Coach Choate Quote: 
"Alec is a grad-transfer catcher from Wofford College. He was leading the Southern Conference in RBI's before the season got cancelled.  His ability to drive the ball will be a nice addition to the lineup.  His leadership behind the plate will be criticial to guide some of our young pitchers."
    
Diego Baqueiro | INF | R/R | Notre Dame HS | Mission Hills, CA

Diego Baqueiro is a two-time PG All-Tournament Team selection, both in WWBA and PG World Series, and a back-to-back PG WWBA Champion. He was named a preseason All-American Honorable Mention and is the 79th ranked player in the state of California.

"Diego is a middle of the order bat and plays a good 3B.  He has tremendous upside. He continues to get better and has the ability to hit for real power."
   
Adam Christopher | RHP | R/R | El Camino Real HS | Porter Ranch, CA

Adam Christopher's accolades include 2019 All West Valley League Pitcher, 2019 All CIF City Section Pitcher, 2019 Daily News All Area Honorable Mention, and 2020 All-State.
 
Coach Choate Quote: 
"Adam knows how to pitch. He commands three pitches for a strike with tremendous feel for the change up. He is very competitive and has a chance to pitch early in his career."
   
Grant Weiss | C | R/R | Valencia HS | Valencia, CA

Grant Weiss enters LMU as the 144th ranked player in California and 10th ranked catcher. As a three-year varsity letter winner, he helped lead his team to League Championship in 2019. Weiss was named Valencia HS Defensive MVP.

"Grant is a high motor guy. Defensively he understands the importance of his role behind the plate. His energy and work ethic are contagious and he will be a great addition to our culture."
    
Matt McClure | RHP | R/R | Santa Margarita HS | Rancho Santa Margarita HS

Matt McClure accolades include 2019 Second Team All-Trinity, 2019 Second Team All-CIF, 2020 All-State, and Second Team All-State.
 
Coach Choate Quote: 
"Matt has the ability to be a front of the rotation type of arm. He attacks the zone with three pitches and is athletic off the mound. At 6'5" he has room to grow and get stronger. We are excited for Matt to be a part of our program."
   
Diego Barrera | LHP | L/L | Mt. San Antonio College | Damien HS | Chino Hills, CA

Diego Barrera earned four wins in 33 innings pitched and 44 strikeouts in 2020. His top outings include an eight-strikeout complete game shutout over El Camino and an 11-strikeout performance over seven innings against Long Beach City College. His honors and recognitions include being named 2018 First Team All-Baseline League, First Team San Gabriel Valley Tribune, First Team Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Rawlings PG Honorable Mention, and California All-Region Second Team.

"Diego will make an immediate impact on the mound for us. He has a chip on his shoulder and is super competitive.  He has a plus change up that he feels comfortable throwing in any situation."
    
Will Grimm | LHP/1B | L/L | Crescenta Valley HS | La Crescenta, CA

Will Grimm has accumulated several honors and recognitions over his high school career including CIF SS Div. II, All CIF Baseball First Team (Spring 2019), First Team All-League Baseball (Spring 2019), Scholar-Athlete Achievement Award, (Spring 2018), CIF SS Div. II, All-CIF Baseball Second Team (Spring 2018), First Team All-League Baseball (Spring 2018), Perfect Game Preseason All-American (2018), Scholar-Athlete Achievement Award (Spring 2017), First Team All-League Baseball (Spring 2017), and Scholar-Athlete Achievement Award (Fall 2016).

"Will is a winner. He is a high achiever both on and off the field. He is a two-way player with a good swing and feel for the barrel from the left-side. We are excited to watch him develop."
   
Owen Hackman | RHP | R/R | Maranatha HS | Los Angeles, CA

Owen Hackman enters LMU as the 171st ranked player in the 2020 Class in CA PBR after earning Pitcher of the Year in his freshman and sophomore years and Rookie of the Year after transferring schools in his junior season.

Coach Choate Quote: 
"Owen is the consummate strike thrower. He will have the opportunity to pitch early in his career with his ability to throw strikes with multiple pitches. We have seen the velocity continue to climb, and only expect him to get better. It will be fun to watch him compete at LMU."
    
Jacob Fried | RHP | R/R | University Prep | Kenmore, WA
 
Jacob Fried enters LMU as the 45th ranked player in the state of WA PBR. He earned ECL Rookie of the Year in 2017 and followed that up by leading his team to their first state appearance in 13 years in 2018 and to the first State Championship in school history in 2019 where he was the winning pitcher in the State Championship game. His honors and recognitions include be named 2019 First Team All-League, 2019 All-State, and PNW Baseball Elite Scout Team. In 2019, Fried pitched a perfect game.

"Jacob is a 6'6 RHP out of University HS in WA. His team won the State Championship last year and he was the anchor on the mound. He has tremendous upside and we look forward to seeing him reach his potential."
   
Logan Hurd | LHP | L/L | Acalanes HS | Lafayette, CA

Logan Hurd was named both a First Team All-League DAL and the Acalanes Varsity Pitcher of the Year.
 
Coach Choate Quote: 
"Logan is a left-handed pitcher with feel for the baseball. He has been a part of winning teams in High School and travel ball. We expect him to continue to bring that type of winning mindset and aggressiveness to Loyola Marymount."
    
Conner Kershaw | RHP/UTL | R/R | Oaks Christian HS | Thousand Oaks, CA
 
Connor Kershaw was named MVP in his freshman year and followed that up with Student Athlete Awards as a sophomore and junior.

"Conner attacks hitters and pounds the zone. He shows feel for three pitches and is not afraid to pitch in.  We are excited to welcome Conner to the LMU Baseball family."
   
Andres Lou | INF | R/R | Chaminade College Prep | Reseda, CA

Andres Lou has been a member of the Guatemalan National Team from 2010 to present and is one of the only two players from Guatemala to go Division 1 for baseball.

"Andres Lou is a special player with a great story. His personality is infectious to the people around him. He is a lockdown defender at shortstop who will be in the middle of the diamond."
    
Liam Critchett | 1B/3B | L/R | Redondo Union HS | Redondo Beach, CA

Liam Critchett was named First Team Bay League.

Coach Choate Quote:
"Liam is an impact- left handed bat. We look for him to be in the middle of the order throughout his career.  It will be fun to see how quickly he breaks into the line-up."
    
Evan Leibel | C | L/R | Los Alamitos HS | Los Alamitos, CA
 
Coach Choate Quote: 
"Evan has a smooth swing from the left side, with the ability to spray the ball around the field. He has an advanced bat and the ability to control the barrel."
   
Alex Marquez | OF | L/R | Loyola HS | West Covina, CA
 
Alex Marquez was named Loyola High School Offensive Player of the Year 2017 and was a
USA NTIS Selection North Carolina in 2018. A member of the Rangers Scout Team in 2019, he also has earned Perfect Game Sub 7 60- 6.5 in 2019 and Perfect Game 2019 West Academic Showcase Top Prospect List.

"Alex is an athletic left-handed hitting outfielder who will bring the dynamic of speed to the offense. He gives us the ability to play multiple outfield positions and execute all types of situations with the bat."
