The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State University on Saturday. Of the seven Lions who competed in the 1500, four set career bests.
In the second heat of the men's 1500 meters, freshman
Shane Ely posted a career best time of 4:01.32, which moved him up to 17
thon LMU's all-time freshman list. The Lions also got career best performances from
Weston Hart with a time of 4:03.22 and
Cooper McCarthy who crossed the line at 4:05.35.
The Lions
Joseph Garcia and
Ethan Frisone also had strong showings in the men's 1500m. Garcia led much of the tactical race, finishing third behind Ely, with a time of 4:02.43. Frisone was fourth in a time of 4:04.00.
On the women's side, senior
Hannah Wohlenberg posted a time of 4:42.75, which was just one second off her career best, to place sixth in the first heat. In heat 3, LMU's
Rebecca Collins placed 11th.
This meet served as a tune up for the Lions – the full squad will debut in their primary events at the Oxy Distance Carnival Classic next Saturday, March 14
th, at the Bill Henry Olympic Track on the campus of Occidental College.
