The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team (6-8, 0-0 WCC) got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third and responded with a two-run fourth then put together a five run sixth to pull away from the San Jose State University Spartans 7-5 on Friday night.
Â
Senior right-handed pitcher
Josh Agnew (2-1) got his fourth start of the season and gave head coach
Nathan Choate five innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.
Â
The Lions found themselves trailing by a run heading into the top of the fourth but were able to race past the Spartans on a pair of RBI doubles from
Dylan Dennis and
Steven Chavez to take a one run lead. Â
Â
LMU gave up a pair of runs to the Spartans in the bottom of the fourth and fifth and walked into the top of the sixth down 5-2. Heading into the sixth down three the Lions got their rally started off with an error and a pair of seeing eyed singles to load the bases. Chavez got an RBI the hard way as he was hit by the Spencer Long pitch to inch the Lions closer.
Â
With the bases still loaded
Tommy Delgado came in to pinch hit for
Matthew Piotrowski and reached on the fielder's choice for the RBI and the Lions second run of the inning.
Kenny Oyama was next at the plate and he laid down a beautiful bunt past the pitcher for the single and RBI to tie the game at five. The Lions pushed the fourth run of the inning across to take the lead and added to it on a
Trevin Esquerra single to push the run total to five for the inning and seven on the game.Â
Â
LMU held onto their two run lead with Choate using the combination of
Holden Christian,
Kyle Mora and
Matt Voelker to close the door on the Spartans and grab the first win of the series. The Lions and Spartans return to Excite Ballpark tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for the second contest of the three-game set.
