The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team (3-5, 0-0 WCC) showed grit on Sunday afternoon but couldn't produce enough offense to keep pace and dropped their series finale to the Sam Houston State Bearkats 12-4 at Don Sanders Stadium.
Â
Getting the Sunday start for head coach
Nathan Choate's Lions was lefty
Sean Paquet and he managed to pitch himself out of trouble in the first two innings but couldn't get the same results in the home half of the third and was relieved by
CJ Fernandezees.
Â
Fernandezees, making his second appearance on the season, inherited a pair of runners in the inning and managed to get an out after a couple of runs came in but couldn't stem the Bearkats rally and allowed four runs in the inning which the Lions couldn't overcome.Â
Â
The Lions got on the board in the visiting half of the six after
Cole Roberts reached on an error and then subsequently advanced to third on a throwing error by the Bearkats third basemen.
Cooper Uhl added to his RBI total on the season when he brought Roberts home for the Lions first run of the day.Â
Â
LMU picked up a hit in the top of the seventh and then put together a rally in the visiting half of the eighth. Roberts started the inning off with a double and then scored on the error by the Bearkats shortstop. With
Trevin Esquerra on first
Matt Voelker came up and smacked his first homerun of the season sending the Hunter Murray offering over the left field wall for a two-run shot giving the Lions three runs in the inning cutting into the SHSU lead. The Lions were unable to produce anymore runs in the visiting half of the ninth and walked away with the defeat. Â
Â
The Lions return to the friendly confines of Page Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos pay a visit with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The game is the first of four between the Lions and Gauchos throughout the season with the final three being played from May 8-11. Â
