The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team (3-2, 0-0 WCC) were the beneficiaries of an error from CSU Bakersfield's second basemen and took advantage bringing in seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal a 7-1 victory over the Roadrunners.
Â
The Lions were stymied for most of the night by the Roadrunners pitching but finally broke through courtesy of the miscue and ran off seven runs against two hits in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Getting the starting nod for their second straight midweek game was
Alex Burge (1-0) and the lefty gave head coach
Nathan Choate two solid innings of four hit baseball. Burge started the game a little slow but was able to settle down by stalling a Bakersfield rally that netted one run off a double from the Roadrunners.
Â
Choate used a total of five pitchers on the night with more than half getting at least two innings of work in. Picking up the victory for the Lions was
Kyle Mora (1-0)Â who came in relief of
Matt Voelker in the top of the seventh. Mora closed the door on the Roadrunners in the seventh and only surrendered a double against three strikeouts in the eighth.
Â
Heading into the bottom of the eighth the Lions found themselves down a run and only one out to spare after the first two hitters flied and struck out. The inning extended off the second basemen's error and subsequently continued off a pair of walks to load the bases. The Lions then received a catcher's interference to tie the game and then a bases loaded walk to take the lead.
Â
With LMU up a run and the bases still full, the Roadrunners pitcher threw a wild pitch plating another run bringing up the red hot
Cooper Uhl. Uhl delivered a single past the shortstop for a pair of RBIs and the Lions never looked back.Â
Â
The Lions ultimately brought in seven runs in the frame and closed the door on Bakersfield in the ninth to preserve the come from behind win.
Â
LMU now starts the first of their five straight weekend road series with a trip to Huntsville, Texas to play Sam Houston State. The meeting will be the first for both schools with the weekend series beginning Friday, Feb. 21 at 4:30 p.m. PT.  Â
