The Loyola Marymount Lions (27-18, 14-8 WCC) took full advantage of another solid performance on the mound from
Codie Paiva and errors by BYU to claim the 5-1 victory on Thursday night.
Â
Paiva, making his 12
thstart of the year, was exactly what the Lions needed. He scattered seven hits against 26 BYU batters while surrendering one run and two walks against seven strike outs.
Â
LMU broke the scoreless tie in the home half of the fourth beginning with
Tommy Delgado's triple to center field. With Delgado at third
Steven Chavez took the first pitch he saw from BYU's Jordan Wood and split the gap in left field for the RBI double. Chavez eventually came home courtesy of
Dylan Hirsch's single to right field for LMU's second run of the inning.
Â
Paiva ran into trouble in the top half of the sixth. He retired the first two Cougars he faced in the inning but gave up a triple to Mitch McIntyre and then an RBI single to Keaton Kringlen. With a man on Paiva walked Noah Hill prompting Gill to make a call to the bullpen for
CJ Fernandezees. Fernandeezes gave up a hit, which loaded the bases, but was able to pitch himself out of the jam as BYU's Brian Hsu grounded out to short ending the inning with the Lions only conceding the one run.Â
Â
LMU broke the game open in the bottom half of the sixth after loading the bases courtesy of a hit batter, single and walk. With the bags full, LMU took advantage of a throwing error by Austin Deming allowing both Delgado and
Alex Lambeau to score. The next LMU batter to come up was
Nick Sogard and he took advantage of another error by the Cougars bringing in Hirsch for the third run of the inning.Â
Â
The Lions closed the door on the Cougars as
Nick Frasso came in to relief Fernandeezes and provided 2.1 innings of shutout baseball, earning his six save on the year. Frasso faced eight BYU batters and struck out six, allowing just one hit while on the mound for the Lions.Â
Â
The Lions and Cougars resume their series tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m., for the second contest of the three-game set with
Josh Agnew taking the hill for LMU against BYU's Easton Walker.
