Lions Bounce Back Against Bulldogs

The Loyola Marymount Lions (29-22, 15-11 WCC) got everything and more from starting pitcher Josh Agnew, who threw his first career complete game as a Lion, along with Cooper Uhl nearly hitting the cycle propelled LMU to an 8-1 victory over Gonzaga on Saturday night.

Agnew took the hill for head coach Jason Gill's team and was tremendous from the very start. He scattered seven hits through 9.0 innings while walking one and striking out six against 34 Gonzaga batters.

The Lions found themselves up three runs heading into the visiting half of the third inning when Agnew ran into his only jam of the game. Agnew allowed a pair of inning-opening singles to the Bulldogs and was the beneficiary of a little good luck as Ernie Yake's double to right center only yielding one run. Agnew was able to pitch himself out of the inning after intentionally walking Troy Johnston he got the next three batters out and ended the Bulldogs threat.

From that point on Agnew was in command, only allowing the Bulldogs three hits and getting no further than second base. Heading into the fourth and finishing it off in the ninth Agnew was in control.

The Lions blew the game open in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring four runs on just three hits and also benefitted from a Bulldog error. In the inning Nick Sogard, Brandon Shearer, Trevin Esquerra and Tommy Delgado all touched home plate for LMU's runs.

Uhl, for his part, was 3-for-4 on the night with a pair of RBI and hit his second home run of the season along with a triple and single. He was one of six Lions to get RBIs on the night which led to the 8-1 victory.

The Lions and Bulldogs head into Sunday afternoon's contest with one win apiece and play the rubber match of their three-game series with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.

Tomorrow afternoon the Lions will be celebrating their seniors for Senior Day as six members of the baseball team received their degrees ranging from Communications, Marketing, Finance, Sociology and Entrepreneurship.
