The Loyola Marymount Lions (24-18, 12-8 WCC) couldn't overcome their miscues and dropped their second straight game to Pepperdine 5-0.
Â
Josh Agnew, getting the start for head coach
Jason Gill's Lions, was the bearer of bad luck on Saturday afternoon as LMU committed four errors contributing to the defeat. Agnew threw 5.1 innings for the Lions, giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out three on 92 total pitches to 27 Waves batters.
Â
Agnew was able to pitch himself out of jam in the home half of the fourth when Pepperdine had runners on second and third with one out. LMU's
Cooper Uhl picked off Matt Kanfer at third and Agnew was able to get Justin Lutes to strike out swinging ending the threat and inning.
Â
The Lions ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth after getting the first out. With the bases empty Agnew gave up back-to-back singles to Joe Caparis and Wyatt Young. With two men on Pepperdine's Quincy McAfee hit a shot to LMU's
Brandon Shearer but his throw to get the runner out at second went over the head of
Alex Lambeau allowing the Waves to get their first run. Brandt Belk then hit a single through the left side scoring Young for their second run of the inning. Pepperdine scored their third run of the inning off another Lion miscue and with three in Agnew was able to get the next two batters to fly out to end the rally.Â
Â
LMU gave up runs in the home half of sixth and eighth innings pushing Pepperdine's lead to five, which it ultimately settled on.Â
Â
The Lions look to bounce back against the Waves as they wrap up their three-game set with the third and final game on April 28
thwith first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
