Lions Miss Opportunities and Fall to Waves 2-0

The Loyola Marymount Lions (24-17, 12-7 WCC) missed on opportunities to score off Pepperdine's Jonathan Pendergast and dropped their West Coast Conference series opener to the Waves 2-0.

LMU missed on a chance to score in the top half of the fourth after getting an inning opening walk from Nick Sogard followed by a Brandon Shearer single. After a Trevin Esquerra fly out to right field the Lions had men on the corners but Steven Chavez flied out followed by a Tommy Delgado groundout ending the threat for the Lions.

Codie Paiva was spectacular on the hill for head coach Jason Gill's Lions as he was able to scatter six hits through 7.2 innings pitched. Paiva's only mistake on the day was a one run homerun to Pepperdine's Cory Willis in the bottom half of the fourth. On the afternoon Paiva faced 34 Wave batters and struck out two, walked four on 102 total pitches.

LMU put together another rally in the top of the sixth when Shearer doubled down the left field line followed by an Esquerra single putting runners on the corners. With Esquerra advancing on a Pendergast wild pitch with one out the Lions had another opportunity to put runs on the board but both Chavez and Delgado went down on strikes ending another Lions rally.

The Lions managed one more hit the rest of the game, a single by Kenny Oyama, but couldn't muster any other offense to break through.

Pepperdine put an insurance run on the board as Paiva exited the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and in relief CJ Fernandezees allowed a Joe Caparis single through the right-side scoring Willis for the second and final run of the game.

The Lions and Waves resume their series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., for the second contest of the three-game set with Josh Agnew getting the starting assignment against Pepperdine's Easton Lucas.
