The Loyola Marymount Lions (24-14, 12-5 WCC) used an early scoring surge and withstood a rally by Saint Mary's to take the second contest of the three-game series 5-4 over the Gaels.
Starting for the Lions was junior
Josh Agnew and he gave head coach
Jason Gill 4.0 innings of work on the mound. Agnew struck out six Gael batters while scattering eight hits and giving up four runs, two of them earned.
The Lions offense put runs on the board in the second, third and fourth innings.
Steven Chavez got LMU going in the top of the second when he doubled down the right field line. With Chavez in scoring position
Alex Lambeau hit a single, the first of his three singles on the day, driving in the first of LMU's five runs.
LMU put up three in the top of the third courtesy of back-to-back walks by
Cooper Uhl and
Brandon Shearer. With two men on
Trevin Esquerra singled to left field scoring Uhl. Next up was
Tommy Delgado and he responded with a sacrifice fly to center brining in Shearer. LMU got their final run of the inning off Lambeau's single to third plating Esquerra.
The Lions were able to manufacture their fifth run of the game on the speed of
Dylan Hirsch. Hirsch singled to the third basemen and then promptly stole second. With Hirsch on second,
Nick Sogard singled to center field bringing in the Lions fifth and final run of the game.
LMU's
CJ Fernandezees came in relief of Agnew and responded with 2.0 innings of no-hit baseball. Fernandezees struck out two and walked three during his time on the hill.
Coming in for the three-inning save was sophomore
Nick Frasso, giving the Lions four strike outs and one hit closing the door on the Gaels and preserving the win for LMU.
