The Loyola Marymount Lions (22-12, 11-3 WCC) shook off early inning struggles and pieced together enough offense throughout to take the second game of the weekend series 3-2 over San Diego.
Â
Taking the hill for head coach
Jason Gill was
Josh Agnew and he responded with 6.0 innings of seven hit baseball, conceding one walk while striking out five. He ran into trouble in the top half of the first surrendering two runs off the bats of USD's Jeff Houghtby and Chris McCready but didn't allow another Torero run for the rest of his 5.0 innings on the mound. Â
Â
The Lions had an opportunity to get those two runs back in the home half of the first but with the bases loaded
Steven Chavez grounded out to first ending the threat. LMU loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with Chavez once again batting and this time the redshirt junior sent a shot to right field for the sac fly giving the Lions their first run of the game.
Â
LMU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off the bat of freshman
Tommy Delgado's single to right field scoring
Brandon Shearer who earlier got on base with a single of his own.Â
Â
With the Lions and Toreros now tied at two, LMU was able to pull ahead in the bottom half of the sixth. The go ahead run was scored off Shearer's double to left center bringing in
Nick Sogard for the third run of the game which ultimately proved to be the winning run.
Â
The combination of
CJ Fernandezees and
Nick Frasso gave the Lions 3.0 innings of no-hit baseball shutting the door on the Toreros and preserving the one-run victory. Frasso was able to pick up his fourth save of the season and the Lions improved their West Coast Conference record to 11-3.Â
Â
The Lions and Toreros wrap up their three-game weekend set tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., as LMU looks to complete the sweep of USD and continue to set the pace in the WCC.
