Lions keep foot on the gas and roll past Louisiana

The Loyola Marymount Lions (8-7) took the final contest of their three-game series against Louisiana Lafayette 7-3 behind Nick Frasso's dominant performance on the hill and timely hitting throughout the game. The Lions won the final two contests of the three-game set over the weekend against the Ragin Cajuns and look to build on that momentum as they head into West Coast Conference play.

LMU got on the board right at the onset of the game when Brandon Shearer legged out a bunt single and the red-hot Trevin Esquerra doubled down the left field line setting the table for Tommy Delgado. The freshman promptly delivered by smacking a single up the middle bringing in two Lions and started the scoring for head coach Jason Gill's team.

The Lions and Ragin Cajuns went quietly in the second and third innings with the only offense coming from LMU's Dylan Hirsch who singled through the right side in the top half of the third equating for the only hit by both teams. The Lions threatened in the top of the fourth after getting singles from Ryan Ruley and Matthew Piotrowski and with both runners in scoring position Nick Sogard was unable to bring anyone home after grounding out to the second basemen, ending the scoring opportunity for LMU.

Sophomore Nick Frasso got the starting nod for the Lions and put together his most dominant performance of the season. He kept Louisiana's hitters guessing all afternoon only allowing the Ragin Cajuns to reach first base. In 6.0 innings pitched, he struck out five, walked one and gave up one hit with zero earned runs equating for his season-long outing.

With Frasso putting together a dominant performance on the bump, Esquerra was swinging the hot stick for the Lions. Esquerra was 3-for-5 on the afternoon with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBI for LMU. His three doubles were one shy of the Lions record for doubles in a game set by Matt Lowenstein against Albany on March 27, 2010. Esquerra is no stranger to hitting three doubles in a game as he reached the feat against UC Riverside on April 4, 2017.

The Lions opened the game up in the top of the fifth scoring three runs and pushing the lead to five over Louisiana. Leading off the inning was junior Cooper Uhl who doubled down the left field line and scored when Esquerra doubled as well. LMU brought in two more runs off Ruley's bat as the senior punched a double down the right field line bringing in Esquerra and Delgado.

LMU was able to provide Frasso with two more runs in the top of the sixth when Uhl pulled off the impressive squeeze bunt scoring a run and Esquerra, hitting the last of his three doubles, scored Shearer bringing the total of runs scored to seven for the Lions.

Louisiana put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs, cutting the Lions lead to five. In relief of Frasso, Gill turned to Sean Paquet. The redshirt sophomore gave up a single to Brennan Breaux, then hit Handsome Monica with a pitch and walked Hunter Kasuls prompting Gill to call on CJ Fernandezees to get outs for LMU. The sophomore responded by getting three tough outs and only allowed two runs to score after coming into a bases loaded no out jam.

Fernandezees was solid in the eighth and was replaced by Josh Robins in the ninth. The sophomore gave up a solo home run in the bottom half of the ninth before closing the door and the series on Louisiana by striking out the last three batters he faced.

The Lions ended their season-long seven game road trip on a positive note and head into WCC play next weekend with a home series against Santa Clara. The Lions next nine games will all be played at Page Stadium equating to their longest home stand of the season. The Lions and Broncos kick off the three-game series on Friday, March 15th with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
