LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team will head up north this week to take on Santa Clara (10-11, 3-7) on Thursday and University of San Francisco (6-15, 2-8) on Saturday.
The Lions (13-10, 6-5) are coming off of a weekend home sweep, as the team upset then ranked No. 25 BYU 61-58, and then beat San Diego 83-57. LMU is the first West Coast Conference team to beat BYU this season.
Heading into this weekend, the Lions boast LMU's All-Time Leader in Assists, as senior
Andee Velasco had six assists against BYU, tallying up her career total to 481, going down as No. 1 in program record books. The senior is second in the conference in rebounds, averaging 4.5.
Jasmine Jones was a scoring leader in both games, as she had a season high of 21 against BYU and had 20 against USD. Gipson and Velasco led with Jones against USD, as Gipson had 24 points and Velasco had 11.
Cierra Belvin and
Bree Alford led in points against BYU, 16 and 11, respectively.
Alford also led the team in rebounds in both games, as she had 13 against BYU and 10 against San Diego. The senior still holds down the No. 1 spot in the conference for rebounding, with 10 per game and 11.6 per conference game and is the only student-athlete in the conference averaging double figures in rebounding across all games played.
The Lions still hold down the No. 1 spot in the conference for offensive rebounds, averaging 14.8 a game.
Gipson maintains her No. 5 spot in the conference with scoring, while Jones climbs up two spots to No. 17.
The Lions fell to the Santa Clara Broncos in their first meeting this season, 83-75 at home, while they beat the USF Dons 66-58. The Dons were on an eight-game losing streak until they beat the Broncos over the weekend.
LMU will take on Santa Clara on Thursday at 7 p.m., and will be back on the court on Saturday to take on USF at noon.
