The Loyola Marymount Lions (4-2) picked up their second straight victory over Saint Louis (2-4) on Saturday night behind
Josh Agnew's sturdy work on the mound, the bullpen producing and LMU's hot bats.
Â
After a quick first inning, the Lions were able to get on the board with the help of junior
Trevin Esquerra's inning opening triple in the bottom of the second.
Alex Lambeau, who got aboard after the passed ball on strike three, was moved around the bases along with Esquerra on freshman
Tommy Delgado's single to left field putting the Lions on the board.Â
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Harry Hibberd's sacrifice bunt moved both Lambeau and Delgado and it paid off when
Dylan Hirsch flied out to right field allowing Lambeau to score. Delgado quickly followed and scored on a wild pitch by the Billikens Jackson Wark upping the score for LMU to 3-0.
Â
Junior
Josh Agnew (1-0) was tremendous on the hill for the Lions, setting a new career-high in strikeouts with eight in his 5.1 innings pitched. Agnew surrendered five hits to the Billikens allowing one earned run but for the most part was untouchable.
Â
The Lions returned to the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth on sophomore
Kenny Oyama's bases clearing triple, which brought in Sogard and Hirsch. The Lions hot hitter,
Brandon Shearer picked up another RBI, upping his season total to three, when he brought home Oyama on a single up the middle increasing the Lion lead to 6-0.Â
Â
The Billikens were able to push runs across in the sixth and the seventh bringing the score to 7-2 but in the top of the eighth things started to get a little tense around Page Stadium.
Â
Saint Louis recorded their first two outs fairly quick but was able to chase reliever Alex Burge from the game after Corrigan Bartlett's RBI single to left and Cam Redding's walk. Lions head coach
Jason Gill then brought in
Sean Paquet who hit the Billikens Ben Livorsi and walked the next two batters he faced bringing in two runs for Saint Louis.
Matt Voelker was then brought into the game and recorded the last out of the inning by striking out Zach Frieling.
Â
Voelker returned for the bottom of the ninth and made quick work of Saint Louis and picked up his second save on the season.
Â
The Lions and Billikens will get right back at it tomorrow afternoon at Page Stadium with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
