LMU drops season opener against UCSB

The Loyola Marymount baseball team had an unexpected home opener on Saturday night against UC Santa Barbara. Due to inclement weather, the series was relocated from Santa Barbara's Caesar Uyesaka Stadium down to Page Stadium. This is becoming a regular occurrence for the Lions and Gauchos as it's been the second time in the past three years the series has shifted from Santa Barbara to LMU.

The Lions (0-1) fought back and forth throughout the game with UCSB but couldn't overcome a four-run ninth by the Gauchos that ultimately gave them the 7-2 victory.

The Lions were down early in the game but Trevin Esquerra belted a solo shot over the left field wall to tie the score at one at the end of two innings.

Both teams exchanged runs in the third inning before the Gauchos managed to take the lead again in the top of the fifth off of Jarred Greene's home run over the right field fence.

The Lions Codie Paiva (0-1) pitched well only allowing three runs over five innings but took his first loss of the season. Nick Frasso came in and was strong for LMU in his three plus innings pitched. The game ultimately got away from LMU when the Gauchos pushed four runs across the board in the top half of the ninth to pad their lead by five which the Lions couldn't rally back from.

The Lions and Gauchos are back at it again tomorrow at Page with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
