Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Continue to Play Tight with League’s Bests, Fall Late

LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount men's basketball (17-10, 5-8 WCC) led for over 33 minutes, but a scoring drought to close out the game allowed BYU (18-10, 10-3 WCC) to come from behind and take the 70-62 win.

BYU scored the opening hoop before LMU answered with six unanswered to take a 6-2 lead less than two minutes into the game. That lead held until the Cougars rattled off six unanswered of their own to retake the lead, 13-12. Dameane Douglas scored eight of LMU's first 10 points.

LMU capitalized on back-to-back steals and fast break layups to open up a 21-13 lead on that 9-0 run. James Batemon followed his three with the first, then Eli Scott stripped the ball and dished it ahead to the running Jeffery McClendon with 8:41 remaining in the first half. Batemon scored a team-high 16 points.

Joe Quintana went on a personal 6-0 run, as part of the team's 8-0 run to extend the lead to 31-19. LMU took a 36-30 lead into intermission, with Quintana leading the team at nine points the half and finishing at 14.

After a Yoeli Childs three to open the second half, Mattias Markusson responded with consecutive baskets at the rim to push the lead to seven. Markusson finished with 10 points and team-highs with six rebounds and two blocks.

The Cougars cut it to a two-point game with 15:04 remaining before the Lions built the lead back up to nine over the next three minutes, 54-45.

BYU used a 14-0 run into the final minute of play to take the lead for the first time in the second half, 64-58, all during a 6 minute and 47 second scoring drought for the Lions. Petr Herman's basket with 8:57 to play was LMU's final field goal of the game.

With another tremendous showing in the crowd on Saturday, Gersten Pavilion averaged over 3,950 fans over the two men's games.

Just one game is on next week's schedule for the Lions, a Saturday 12:30 p.m. start in Stockton against Pacific.
