LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount University women's volleyball players
Savannah Slattery and
Tess Reid were named to the 2019- All-West Coast Conference Volleyball First Team, while Emme Walters was named 2019 WCC All-Freshman, announced by the conference on Monday.
Slattery and Reid were among only 16 WCC players to be named to the All-First Team. The seniors were both team and conference leaders all season.
Slattery was first on the team and in the conference in kills, totaling 411 on the season, while having 258 in conference play. The senior led in kills per set with 3.57 and posted a .233 hitting percentage.
"Savannah was one of the hardest people to stop offensively this year when she got her game going," said head coach
Aaron Mansfield. "She not only found ways to score points for our team, but she also carried a big load in serve receive and developed into an outstanding 6 rotation Outside Hitter. I knew she had it in her to develop that skill set to be able to be on the court 100 percent of the time and I am proud of how much she has developed physically and mentally in her time here."
Reid led the Lions in assists, and was also a conference leader, totaling 883 on the season and 455 in WCC play. Reid was second on the team in service aces with 27.
"Tess has an incredible ability to make those around her better," said Mansfield. "She competes as hard as anyone I've coached and developed a great ability to set an effective fast tempo offense which put our hitters into great positions to score. She also was one of the most reliable and toughest servers we had, which is a testament to all the work she put in practice to developing that skill."
Newcomer Emme Walters earned her All-Freshman title after posting a .348 hitting percentage, the best on the team, while going .296 in conference play, making the freshman a conference leader. Walters totaled 115 kills on the season for the Lions.
"Emme is one of the most improved players in our gym," said Mansfield. "She came in playing at a high level, but as freshmen there is always a period of time that it takes to get used to the speed of this level and once she got acclimated to that, she just took off. Her ability and willingness to learn and try new things was a big factor in her developing into one of the best slide attackers in our conference. She also improved tremendously with her ability to block effectively within our system over the course of the year. Emme has a bright future and we are excited to continue to build around her going forward."
Slattery, Reid, Walters and the rest of the Lion squad ended their 2019 season in November. Slattery and Reid will graduate from LMU, while Walters will return for the 2020 season.
