Former Lion Megill Selected by Cubs in Rule 5 Draft

Former Loyola Marymount University Lions right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday morning.

The 6-foot-8 Megill posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 39 relief appearances across three minor league levels in 2019. He finished the season at Triple-A, where he had a 4.47 ERA in 32 relief appearances.

Teams that add a player in the Rule 5 Draft must pay $100,000 to the club that they acquired him from. The drafted player must then stay on his new team's 25-man roster for the entirety of the next season. To be removed from the roster, he must be placed on outright waivers and he's also subject to being offered back to his previous team for $50,000.

Megill graduated from LMU in 2015 and was selected by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He was drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals despite not appearing in a game for the Lions that year. He graduated a semester early out of high school to attend LMU for the 2012 baseball season and garnered Honorable Mention All-WCC and All-Freshman Team recognition.

He left LMU with the fourth-best ERA in team history (3.40) and second-best opponent batting average (.234). Megill averaged 8.71 strikeouts per game, placing him fifth in LMU history upon his departure. He registered 19 quality starts in his career and tossed 6.0+ innings in 20 of his 34 career starts for the Lions.
