RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The LMU men's water polo team (14-12) finished the season with a win over five-seed Concordia (9-18) on Saturday morning, 21-10, to take fifth in the Western Water Polo Association championships. The #12 Lions used a seven goal second period to spark the 21-10 victory.
Concordia opened the game with a goal, before
Joseph Cavazos and
Luke Chandler scored on consecutive possessions to give LMU the lead. After the Eagles tied the score back up,
Christian Huhn and
Alexandros Athymaritis gave the lead back to the Lions with goals a minute apart from one another. Concordia added one back, but
David Carrasco and Cavazos each scored in the final minute of the period to push the LMU lead to 5-3.
The second quarter is where the Lions did a majority of their damage, outscoring the Eagles, 7-1, in the period. Cavazos and Carrasco each scored twice in the second, with
Jonny Rimlinger adding one before Concordia stopped the run of seven unanswered. Huhn scored twice in the final minute and a half before halftime, including a goal with one second left on the clock.
After Concordia scored twice to open the third and cut it to five, Athymaritis gave pushed it to a 14-6 advantage with 2:43 on the clock.
LMU put up another seven spot on the board in the final quarter of the season. Cavazos scored twice to bring his total to a game-high six goals, while Carrasco scored his fourth of the game and Rimlinger added his second.
Austin Clark,
Jack Dunbar, and
Ford Witman all scored in the final quarter to secure the 21-10 lead.
Zack Zemliak made three saves and added three steals in his half in goal, while
Jon Lien recorded five saves in the win.
