The Loyola Marymount University Lions will host the 2019 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships on Friday, Nov. 1 at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys, Calif. The Lions will be hosting the Championships for the first time since 1981. The Championships will start with the women's 6k race beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by the men's 8k race at 11:00 a.m.

At last year's championships the Lions men's team finished sixth while the women's team placed fourth.

"The WCC Championships is our first test of the postseason and our goal, as always, is to improve on our team finishes from last year," said head coach Scott Guerrero. "Our team has been coming on strong late in the season, with one of our best performances just two weeks out from conference at the Bronco Invitational. At that meet, nine athletes ran personal bests, which tells me we are peaking at the right time. We're ready to have a great day on Friday and look forward to seeing Lion fans out on our home course."

Competing in the women's 6k for the Lions are Rosie Cruz, Kyla Danforth, Avery Doan, Gabriela Hernandez, Raina Hines, Ann Kelly, Dani Rowlinson and Hannah Wohlenberg. Some of the competition the Lions women will face are No. 4 in the nation Brigham Young University and No. 6 in the west region Portland.

The men will follow and participating for the Lions are Zach Arias, Shane Ely, Kyle Friedler, Ethan Frisone, Joseph Garcia, Roc Johnson, Simeon Paul, Max Smith, Jacob Villegas and Roberto Ruelas. The Lions men will be competing against No. 2 in the nation BYU, No. 12 in the nation Portland and the No. 7 and No. 14 in the west region Gonzaga and Pepperdine, respectively.

With the Lions set to host this event in almost forty years, athletes from both sides are excited about the opportunity:

Kyla Danforth:
"My individual goal is to crack the top 15. Our conference is competitive and has teams that make it to Nationals every year, and I want to show that I can compete on that level. As a team, I hope we can maintain our 4th place finish or better. But more importantly, I want everyone to race their best and really fight for every last spot."

Ann Kelly:
"I am so excited to have conference close to home this year. Knowing you have a home crowd to cheer you on makes the race even more special."

Ethan Frisone:
"It's a pretty awesome and unique opportunity to be racing conference so close to home. I definitely feel lucky to be here when we get our shot to host. Since the hosting duty rotates between all the WCC schools, we don't get this chance very often. I'm looking forward to having a huge group of supporters out in Van Nuys to make the home field advantage count."

Raina Hines:
"We'll have that homefield advantage over everyone. I think being so close to home and not having to travel will relieve some stress."

Hannah Wohlenberg:
"I think it'll be really fun to have the 'home meet' experience. I've never had that experience in my four years here, so it's really special that my last conference meet will be somewhat of a 'home meet' for me. We always have a pretty great showing of Lion fans wherever we are, but I hope that we'll have an extra big turn-out for this meet."

Joseph Garcia:
"I'm excited to have everyone out on the course supporting us this year. Seeing familiar faces when you're hurting during a race has a whole different effect. We're coming off of pretty high mileage weeks, so that's money in the bank for Conference and we will be ready to cash out on Friday."

Simeon Paul:
"Not many people get to represent their school at the Conference or Regional level so I really appreciate every opportunity."

Kyle Friedler:
"I'm really excited to host conference because it is a great opportunity for LMU students to come out and support us. It's really difficult to get people to come to cross country and track meets, but because it's so close to campus this year and this meet is one of the most important of the season, we can get a lot of people cheering us on."
