The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's and women's cross country teams returned to the course over the weekend and competed in Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Calif.
With just two weeks until the West Coast Conference Championships in Van Nuys, Calif. the Bronco Invitational provided the Lions with another tune-up before the championship season begins. The Lion men were 6th overall and third among conference opponents while the women were 10th overall and also finished third against conference opposition.
The men's 8k invitational started the day and proved to be a race that saw many Lion runners set new personal records.
Max Smith crossed the line at 24:42 for 27th overall and cut his personal record by 14 seconds.
Joseph Garcia finished at 24:50 good for 35th place, within a few seconds of his personal record.
Roc Johnson had an individual breakthrough over the weekend setting a new personal record of 24:50, taking off 20 seconds from his previous record and good for 37th place.
Simeon Paul came within four seconds of his best time, finishing in 24:58 and
Kyle Friedler shaved 10 seconds off his personal best, clocking in at 25:08.
Zach Arias finished the race with a time of 25:21.
The women's 6k invitational race resulted in seven new personal records with one runner cracking into the top-10 on the LMU all-time freshman list.
Kyla Danforth dipped under the 21-minute barrier for the first time ever, running 20:33 for 7th place and cut into her personal record by 32 seconds, moving her up to #8 all-time over 6k.
Gabriela Hernandez posted a time of 21:36 setting a new personal record to become the ninth fastest freshman in LMU history.
Ann Kelly set a new personal record with a time of 21:44, taking 38 seconds off her previous best.
Hannah Wohlenberg crossed the line at 21:46, followed by redshirt sophomore
Dani Rowlinson who cut 35 seconds off her personal record, running 22:02.
Raina Hines cut an impressive 44 seconds off her best time, with a 22:15.
Rosie Cruz had a stellar run for the Lions finishing with a time of 22:24, while
Cynthia Melendez crossed the line at 22:24 and
Avery Doan crossed at 22:43 and cut 35 seconds off her personal record.
In the men's open race,
Shane Ely set a new personal record at 25:01 good for 20th place. Shane's time ranks him #5 among all Lions who competed on Saturday.
Ethan Frisone crossed the line at 25:35 for a 35th overall finish.
Jacob Villegas got close to a new personal record with his time of 25:38 while
Roberto Ruelas and
Cooper McCarthy crossed the finish line at 26:10 and 26:23, respectively.
Next up for the Lions is the Titan Invitational on Friday, Oct. 15. Seven days later on Friday, Nov. 1, the Lions will host the WCC Championships in Van Nuys, Calif.
