LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- Loyola Marymount volleyball is already off to a strong 2019 season, as two of the team's incoming freshman, Audrey Klemp and Rosie Booth were named Gatorade State Player of the Year award winners, announced by The Gatorade Company on Thursday.
This award recognizes success on and off of the court including, exceptional athletic excellence, academic achievements and demonstration of exemplary character.
"We are proud of Rose and Audrey for being recognized as the Gatorade State Players of the Year for their respective states, Oregon and Kansas," said
Aaron Mansfield." They wouldn't have been able to earn the award without their hard work, perseverance and their constant commitment to getting better. It is always nice to be recognized for these athletic achievements and I know that this award will only motivate them to continue to put in the necessary work to become the best players they can be. We can't wait to get them on campus this summer."
An award of high prestige, only one volleyball player from each state is selected. Klemp was the standout in Kansas, while Booth in Oregon.
Booth led her team to the Class 6A state championship and pulled off an impressive 31-4 record. The outside hitter tallied 405 kills her senior season, 205 digs and 34 blocks.
The Oregon native was named The Oregonian 2018 Player of the Year, all while maintaining a 3.97 grade point average and donating her time to community service.
Klemp led her team to two consecutive Class 5A state championships while going 34-8 on the season. The Kansas native racked up 527 kills her senior season, while producing 100 digs and 30 blocks.
The outside hitter was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Second Team. Klemp maintained an A average in the classroom and volunteered as a youth sports camp counselor.
Both future Lions are finalists for the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award, which will be announced this January.
Booth and Klemp will join a dominant Lion squad this fall, as the team is coming off of an incredible 2018 season where they swept Duke in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the second round.
