Sacramento, Calif. – The Lion men and women traveled to Northern California to race at the Capital Cross Challenge on Saturday at the Arcade Creek Golf Course. The men finished in fourth place as a team with 136 points while the women were second overall with 91 points out of 26 teams.
 
Senior Koby Pederson led the way for the Lions, finishing second overall and was the top collegian in the race. Pederson's time of 24:06.0 was a career best for the 8-kilometer distance by over three seconds, and was 24 seconds faster than he has ever run on this course. Next in for the Lions was senior Jack Polerecky (24:39.3). He was able to hold on for 10th place and was the sixth-fastest collegian in the race. The next three Lions to cross the line were less than two seconds apart led by sophomore Simeon Paul (25:27.5), senior Branden Estrada (25:28.0) and freshman Zach Arias (25:29.4). The trio finished 54th, 56th and 58th, respectively. Outside of the top-5 scorers, sophomore Joseph Garcia was less than three seconds behind Arias with a time of 25:32.0, placing 61st.    
 
Junior Kyla Danforth led the Lion women, crossing the line in ninth place overall (7th collegian) with a time of 21:36.0. Five spots behind Danforth in 14th was senior Giselle Masedo. The senior had the best race of her career running a 15-second career best with a time of 21:45.0. Less than 10 seconds behind Masedo in 23rd place was senior Maddi Vorgitch (21:54.7). Rounding out the scoring five were junior Hannah Wohlenberg and freshman Grace Catena in 28th and 42nd places, respectively. Wohlenberg eclipsed the 22-minute barrier running 21:59.9 in the race. Catena ran 22:20.6 and finished 42nd in only the second 6K of her young career. Sixth for the Lions was freshman Perri Bockrath in 55^th (22:35.7).
 
Both teams got the opportunity to run at the same site the NCAA West Regional will be held in about six weeks. The women will traverse the same 6,000 meter course while the men will add another 2,000 meters to what they ran today and cover 10 kilometers.
 
The Lions will take next weekend off and return to action at the Bronco Invitational on October 13 in Sunnyvale, Calif.
