Lions Cannot Decode Morse

Freshman right-hander Eli Morse baffled the LMU bats, allowing just one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts, as Portland (14-22, 7-9 WCC) defeated LMU (17-21, 10-6 WCC) by a score of 6-1 on Friday night from LMU's Page Stadium.

LIONS CAN'T DECODE MORSE: Morse threw 132 pitches and allowed just a solo home run to Niko Decolati in the sixth inning. Morse walked three and struck out 11 to lower his ERA to 3.57 and improve to 3-5 on the year.

FOUR-RUN FOURTH: Junior right-hander Codie Paiva lasted 7.0 innings in the start for LMU, surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Four of the five runs came in the fourth inning, as Paiva allowed the four runs on four hits. In addition to the fourth, Portland put a run on the board in second on a solo home run from Cody Hawken, and added one more in the eighth after taking advantage of a Lion error.

BOX SCORE NOTES: Decolati finished the game 2-for-4, collecting two of LMU's five hits ââ'¬¦ Hawken went 2-for-3 with the homer, three runs scored and one RBI ââ'¬¦ freshman CJ Fernandezees tossed 2.0 strong innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

LION NOTES: The Lions have now dropped nine of the last 13 overall.

ON DECK: LMU returns to action on Saturday when it continues the three-game West Coast Conference series with Portland at 6 p.m.
